Local playwright and actor Norm Reynolds is taking the New Zealand Fringe Festival by storm with his solo show Making it Up (One Playwright to Another). Detailing Reynolds’ journey in the theatre, leading up to him meeting his idol Edward Albee, Making it Up is a fascinating look at Reynolds’ life. Directed by Lesley Ballantyne and recorded by John Bertram, Making it Up is a much-needed reminder that life’s journey is never perfectly linear, and that dreams can come true.
Making it Up (One Playwright to Another) weaves in pieces of Reynolds’ other works Put Up Your Hand and The Good-bye Play into his story about meeting and interviewing famous American Playwright Edward Albee. The old adage “never meet your heroes” certainly doesn’t apply here, as Reynolds’ interactions with Albee become life-changing in very positive ways. I love that this production was filmed at the Red Sandcastle Theatre here in Toronto; it’s a hidden gem of the city which now gets to be shared all over the world! It also allows the play to have the intimate feeling of being in a theatre while also being filmed.
Reynolds gives an impressive performance in Making it Up (One Playwright to Another). With Reynolds playing all of the interesting personalities he encounters throughout his life, Making it Up certainly keeps the audience, and Reynolds, on their toes. You can feel his passion and personality radiating through his performance, and it’s easy to tell how much his interactions with Albee mean to him and the trajectory his life is now on.
You can catch Making it Up (One Playwright to Another) at the New Zealand Fringe Festival until March 10th, and then it’s on to the Dunedin Fringe festival from March 13th – 24th.
