Hallowe’en would not be complete without a trip to the most spooky theatre in town for a ghoulish tale or two from our favourite necormancer and magician Doc Wuthergloom. This year, he’s taking audiences on a harrowing journey full of ghouls, goblins, and a kapre (oh my!) with Doc Wuthergloom’s Here There Be Monsters. Full of frights and delights, a night out at the Red Sandcastle theatre is the perfect thing to keep spooky season going!

Eric Woolfe creates a full atmosphere with these productions; from the carnival music to the banners and costumes, everything comes together to create a full universe for us to explore together. I love how every year there’s a new item for purchase from Doc Wuthergloom’s assistant Caesarina. I still sleep with my witch bottle beside my bed, which I purchased at last year’s performance of Dollhouse of Deadly Sins, just in case. This year, Doc Wuthergloom has released his “Field Guide to Monsters”, the perfect way to ensure that none of the blunderbeasts or migos (or worse) follow you home. The ambiance and the overall ethos of the show makes these performances unique, and while you always know that you’re going in to a good and spooky time, I’m never entirely sure how the night will go or entirely what to expect (which is perfect!).

Here There Be Monsters featured some really interesting puppets, all hand made for this production. I loved how there was an overarching story into which are woven the other smaller stories, all featuring creatures which you can learn more about in “Doc Wuthergloom’s Field Guide to Monsters!” Each story had a perfectly matched illusion to go with it, another element of the storytelling I’ve come to adore from an Eldritch production. Everything from disappearing tricks to mind reading and more! I was lucky to attend on Devil’s Night (October 30th) and we got a bonus story at the end of the evening; a spine chilling tale of the Wild Subway that takes away children in the night. Again it had a perfectly paired illusion with it and was truly frightening!

Doc Wuthergloom always makes sure that the audience is heavily involved in his illusions, and it makes for a totally different experience every time you see one of his spectacular shows. My partner was asked to participate in an illusion and things went slightly awry: another participant claimed my partner’s answer as his own in a mind-reading illusion, creating a hilarious response from the magician. Watching Doc Wuthergloom handle the situation is delightful, and always garners plenty of laughter from the audience as well.

If you’re looking to keep spooky season alive for just a little while longer, then look no further than Doc Wuthergloom’s Here There Be Monsters. Running until November 5th, you won’t want to miss your chance to be a part of this wonderous production. And make sure to pick up your copy of “Doc Wuthergloom’s Field Guide to Monsters” while your’e there, you never know when it might come in handy!
