Theatre Passe Muraille’s studio space is currently home to Expandido Theatre Group’s production of Sergio Blanco’s The Rage of Narcissus. Directed by Marcio Beauclair and translated by Daniel Goldman, this incredible one-man show delves deep into the artist’s psyche and in the end reflects back the artist in all of us. The Rage of Narcissus is an incredible show that you don’t want to miss.
The Rage of Narcissus begins with very clear definitions of what we’re about to witness: that it’s a tale being told by one person, about another, although both people will talk to us at times throughout the story. What actually occurs is a slow-burn of a mystery with more twists and turns than I was prepared for! It’s a brilliant story, giving us one little detail at a time until all of the fragments coalesce into one almost gruesome image. With a “Momento” type feel, The Rage of Narcissus will keep you on the edge of your seat until the lights go down.
The lights frequently come up, however, at key points during the performance, illuminating the audience and allowing us to see ourselves in the wall of mirrors which act as the backdrop of the set. Renato Baldin’s design encompasses the meaning and heart of the play so perfectly in this beautifully arranged reflective gallery, while the mod furniture gives posh-hotel vibes without question.
Matthew Romantini gives a stunning performance in The Rage of Narcissus. He keeps the audience captivated in every moment; his charm and wit are infused into each little detail of the performance. While there are clear definitions of when he’s playing Matthew and when he’s playing Sergio, he transitions between the two effortlessly; a testament to his immense talent.
This is the final weekend for this incredible show. You absolutely don’t want to miss this! For more information and tickets, visit: https://ca.patronbase.com/_TheatrePasseMuraille/Errors/SoldOutProd?prod_id=4M
