Live performance comes in many different forms, all of which can be found in our amazing city of Toronto. Since June of 2022, I’ve been attending the live performances of The Annex Singers at Grace Church-on-the-Hill to hear their incredible choral concerts. Each performance I’ve attended has left my blown away by the artistry of everyone involved. They’re currently in their 43rd season, and it’s easy to see why they’re such a mainstay in their community.

With a 65 person chorus, it’s no wonder to me that I get goosebumps with every song; to hear that many voices in unison, and with such exceptional acoustics, is thrilling. These talented artists are lead by Maria L. Case, the Artistic Director of The Annex Singers. Case is a talented composer, “Into Flight” was entirely pieces of her own creation. The programmes for the performance are always very well balanced between solos, chamber pieces, and the larger choral numbers. I, of course, have a special love for the ones which are based on Shakespeare’s works, but they sing choral versions of all kinds of poetry and well as classical choral works.
Their performances often feature other musicians/performers as well. “The Winter Garden” featured a flute trio to provide bird-like instruments for the programme, and had an incredible percussionist performing along with them; I had no idea you could use a cello bow to play a tubular instrument! Every performance is so unique and I love that they bring in other musicians to help with that.
The Annex Singers have another performance coming up on May 13th at 7:30pm at Grace Church-on-the-Hill. This instalment is called “Voices of Earth” with songs by Josquin, Elgar, Britten, Shaw and (another personal fave) The Beatles. I’ve already got my tickets for Saturday night! I hope to see you there! For more information and tickets, visit: https://annexsingers.com
